The missionaries working here have a very hard time spreading the gospel due to severe cold weather and a lack of transportation through the high mountains. There are no traditional Christians. They work among the gentiles stricken by different kinds of social evils. The inhabitants include Islamists, Hindus, Buddhists and some new believers which are only up to the standard of truth-seekers. They come below 2%. Since the literacy rate is 42% the missionaries also has to concentrate in opening education centers. They strive very hard to reveal facts to them. The occupation of the people here is mostly cultivation, feeding the cattle or some labor work. They have a poor economic condition and most of them live in houses built of stone and mud. Since there is only poor transportation in many places, house churches are being promoted here. They have to come by foot in case of combined worship in Base Churches. Jammu and Kashmir is thus one of the least evangelized and most difficult and backward states in India.
At present we undertake the mission work of Evg. Rajendran and Sunitha who work in six different areas. Prayer meetings are being conducted in houses irrespective of all the practical difficulties. Please pray for building a church in the most suitable place. They do evangelization by visiting houses, distributing tracts, conducting cottage meetings. People come and get baptized. Last month eight people got baptized. A few are also waiting to get baptized later due to the extreme cold climate and heavy snowfall.
